If you enjoy learning about our 16th President, the book Abraham Lincoln by Ingri and Edgar d’Aulaire is a wonderful resource for introducing kids to this remarkable man. This free copywork was carefully selected from the book to enhance your child’s learning experience.

Abraham Lincoln by Ingri & Edgar d’Aulaire

One of the most notable features of the D’aulaire books is the engaging illustrations that help the reader see the main character through the eyes of a child. Ingri and Edgar use both colored and hand-sketched pictures to embellish all their stories. They have many other books on famous history heroes like Eric the Red, Columbus, Ben Franklin, and George Washington, but their book Abraham Lincoln is one of my favorites.

They begin honest Abe’s story with his humble birth in the backwoods cabin of the Kentucky wilderness. As a boy he learned to work hard by doing farm chores and chopping woods. Although his education was limited, he had an insatiable desire to learn! He once walked 20 miles to borrow a book.

What is Charlotte Mason Copywork?

Charlotte Mason, a 19th-century educator, is credited with the practice we now call copywork. Copywork is the simple habit of hand-copying quality selections of literature. When you handwrite passages from a book or poem, your mind slows down. You remember details more clearly.

It is similar to the difference between riding in a car and walking. When you ride in a car, you notice a couple of landmarks along the way. But when you walk to a destination, you see and remember in much greater detail. This is what happens when you write things out by hand.

Copywork should take no more than 10-20 minutes of time for a child to do. Short lessons are key! I like to have our kids copy one sentence for first grade, two for second, and so on.

You can learn more about how we use copywork in our homeschool in these blog posts.

We also use narration along with copywork to help our kids write well. We begin with oral narrations and then progress to written narrations when they are ready. You can learn more about narration in this blog post.

Copywork Benefits

As a homeschool mom of 16 years, I have seen the benefits of long-term copywork practice. My kids have become proficient writers simply by using copywork and narration as the spine of their writing curriculum.

Here are a few of the benefits I have seen in our kids.

  • Improves the power of attention.
  • Teaches several language arts skills all in one: punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary.
  • Copywork is meaningful independent work (unlike worksheets) because kids can learn language skills in context.
  • Copywork familiarizes kids with treasured passages from favorite books.

How to Use Copywork with This Book

When our kids do copywork along with D’aulaire’s Abraham Lincoln, we like to do it one of two ways. Either I read a few pages and they copy the corresponding selection or they read on their own and copy. You can determine which works best for you, depending on your child’s individual needs.

I have our kids write the title of the book at the top. In the margin, I have them write the date in short form as they add each new copywork selection. Writing the date in copywork notebooks helps kids (and moms!) see progress over time. I require them to write it in their neatest handwriting.

One of the most important parts of copywork practice is checking their work. When they finish, review your child’s work with them, discussing punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc.

What’s Included in the Abraham Lincoln by Ingri & Edgar d’Aulaire Free Copywork

This free printable has 3 pages of copywork from Abraham Lincoln by Ingri & Edgar d’Aulaire. I like to read a few pages a day to my child and have the child copy the copywork that matches those pages. Each selection is 1-2 sentences long, so it is designed for a child in first or second grade. You can also assign a child to read the book on their own and follow the same pattern.
