The well-loved stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder have captured children’s hearts for many years. These Little House in the Big Woods copywork pages will enhance your child’s understanding of the book and sharpen their writing skills.

Little House In the Big Woods

I love reading this story to our children because it tells relatable stories of early American pioneer life. Laura Ingalls lives with her Pa, Ma, and sisters Mary and Carrie in the big woods of Wisconsin. She tells stories about a long ago daily way of life from a little girl’s perspective.

Readers learn about working together as a family to harvest food and care for the farm animals. Laura tells of Pa’s hunting adventures, the dance at Grandpa’s, and Christmas celebrations with the aunts and uncles. Laura tells how she made sugar snow after a big snowstorm. And who can help but hear Pa’s fiddle as Laura describes the songs he plays by the fire?

Little House in the Big Woods is a delightful story to read with your children!

Audio Version of Little House in the Big Woods

One of the best investments we made in our homeschool was to purchase the Little House Audio CD’s narrated by Cherry Jones. The Little House books are excellent to give kids to read on their own or to read aloud as a family, but listening to Cherry Jones narrate these stories is an experience all in itself.

Cherry’s tone and inflections take the listener back to the pioneer days. When our kids were younger, they listened to these at night in bed as they were falling asleep. They would wake up the next day quoting the lines over and over with expression in their voice. They still quote lines from the Little House stories!

I also love how Cherry sings the old folk songs that Pa plays on his fiddle. Listening to the songs as someone sings them makes the story come alive for children.

Using Copywork to Teach Writing

When I started homeschooling several years ago, I heard many people sing the praises of copywork and NARRATION, but I didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. I had been a public school classroom teacher and from my experience, we did a separate lesson for spelling, writing style and process, vocabulary, and punctuation. Each of these concepts was taught in isolation.

What I learned about copywork is that it is an all-in-one habit that covers all of these concepts. When practiced with narration and checked regularly for correction, copywork is a supertool!

After sixteen years of observing the fruit of daily copywork in my kids, I am convinced that it is an excellent practice that is widely underestimated. Though it is not the only tool I use to teach writing, it is one I would not do without!

Handwriting sections of quality writing slows down the mind. When you write something down at the start of your day, you are more likely to think of it again later throughout the day.

How We Use Copywork in Our Homeschool

On our kids homeschool checklists, copywork is listed for every day of the week. It usually takes 10-15 minutes for them to complete. After they finish, they bring it to me to correct and review.

We use two simple tools.

  1. A spiral notebook
  2. A 3-prong folder

I print the copywork pages, three-hole punch them, and put them into the pronged folder.

A 1/2 inch binder works well too. For this, you can put the copy pages right in the binder or put each printed page in a slip cover. The nice thing about this, for younger or distracted writers, is that you can use a dry-erase marker to section off the part they are to copy. I’m using this now with our 7-year-old who gets easily distracted. Seeing the rectangular box of the part he is copying, helps him focus.

In the spiral notebook, I have our kids write the date in the margin and the copywork passage next to it. Because they write the date beside each entry, I am able to see the progress they make throughout the year. I require them to do it in their neatest handwriting and make them correct sloppy work and mistakes.

Little House in the Big Woods Unit Study Ideas

If you want your kids to experience life as they read about it in Little House in the Big Woods, these are some fun activities to enhance the stories from the book.

  • Make sugar snow. Our kids loved doing this. Wait for a snowstorm, take a little maple syrup and drizzle it in designs on the snow. When it hardens, carefully bring it inside for the children to eat.
  • Make butter with cream. Buy heavy whipping cream or skim the cream off of raw milk and put it in a small jar. Have the kids take turns shaking the jar until it thickens into cream.
  • Make a log house. Pull out the Lincoln logs and have the kids build their own little house in the woods.
  • Take a tour of a reconstructed log cabin made to look like the little house in Pepin, Wisconsin that Laura describes in The Little House in the Big Woods.

What’s Included in the Little House in the Big Woods Copywork Pages?

This free printable has 4 pages of free copywork from each chapter in the book Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The copywork selections are 1-2 sentences long. You can have your child copy one sentence a day, or, for children a little older, have them copy each chapter section per day, since the chapter passages are short.
